"A Liberator? He Can't Even Get Along With His Guru!"
Terry Melcher was a noted L.A. scenester, producer of bands from The Byrds to Paul Revere & The Raiders, member of Dennis Wilson's fabled posse of skirt-chasers The Golden Penetrators, target of Charles Manson, friend of the Salivating Ear. Ellington "Fugi" Jordan wrote Etta James' hit "I Would Rather Go Blind" while serving a stretch in the pen, then palled around with Eddie Kendricks and Stevie Wonder making records a little too heavy for either of them. Somewhere between the two the Ear pitches his camp, between the insurrectionary daydream of the one and the sardonic narcissism of the other. It won't be the last time we find the Ear displaying for us the famous, Fitzgeraldian equation of a first rate mind at work, holding these not-quite-contradictory notions in equipoise.
